[Lib-helig-l] FW: LIASA Annual Conference: Fourth call for papers

LIASA Fifteen Annual Conference

FOURTH ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Date:              8-11 October
Venue:           Cape Town International Convention Centre

Theme:          LIBRARIES IN DIALOGUE FOR TRANSFORMATION AND INNOVATION

Contact:        conference2013@liasa.org.za

Website:        http://www.liasa.org.za

You are hereby invited to submit proposals for papers & posters that will focus on areas related to the theme of the conference.

The 15th Annual LIASA Conference aims to provide opportunities to debate, share, and learn from local and international professional colleagues and partners.  All relevant stakeholders and partners are invited to participate in discussions and workshops around the proposed topics.   Papers based on case studies and best practice would be given preference.  Papers and poster proposals on topics such as the following will be considered for inclusion in the conference programme:

LIBRARIES IN DIALOGUE FOR TRANSFORMATION AND INNOVATION

Human conversation is the most ancient and easiest way to cultivate the conditions for change – personal change, community and organizational change… dialogue are powerful tools for developing the capacity for deep, authentic conversation in organizations (Deepika Nath).

The golden thread weaved into transformation and innovation is dialogue which allows for the creation of flow and meaning through and between people. Dialogue is conversations between equals; it makes the implicit explicit; it is a change agent in relationships to create new grounds for mutual respect and collaboration. Dialogue is fundamental in building collective meaning and growing a sense of community and, enriching the spirit of collaboration.

Transformation is interpreted to be the change in thinking, change in practice, change in behaviour, change in engagements with the goal of nurturing a culture of innovation for a vibrant and better individual and contributor to national and global imperatives. The library as the epicentre of knowledge production and innovation must stimulate transformation for an improved quality of life for all.

South Africa has been on a positive political transformation trajectory since 1994. However, there has to be an extension of the political transformation agenda to include the development agenda which must be underpinned by open engagement with and between all stakeholders. The quadruple helix, that is, the library, government, civil society and the corporate world must collaborate to inspire and incite continuous and sustained dialogue en route to the development and strengthening of the transformation agenda: dialogue and transformation must become infectiously systemic.

It is beyond debate that information is the essential ingredient for dialogue and concomitant transformation. The core business of libraries is the acquisition, organization and dissemination of information. At the base of the formal learning hierarchy, school libraries are pivotal for a strong educational system. It is here that learners, exposed to appropriate, supplementary and complementary information are nurtured to become critical thinkers and active participants in a knowledge economy. Reinforcing critical thinking and participation in the knowledge economy is the people’s university – the public library. At the upper end of the formal learning hierarchy is tertiary education which, again, is totally dependent on libraries for success in producing active contributors to the national and global knowledge economy.

The growth and development of the library and information sector and the country demands ‘three-sixty’ dialogues with all within the quadruple helix: through dialogue will South Africa come out on the other side as economically and socially transformed and innovative.

The following are the sub-themes of the Conference:

Libraries in dialogue

Libraries and transformation

Libraries and innovation

Best practices in libraries

Libraries enhancing user experience

Libraries as an agent of change

School libraries and education

Academic and research Libraries

New modes of scholarly communication

Public libraries and social development

Libraries and civil society engagement

Special libraries

Libraries on the political agenda

[Lib-helig-l] Fwd: [e-LIS Editorial Board] Fwd: FW: IFLA builds its new repository with EPrints Services

Apologies for Cross posting.

From: Joanne Yeomans
Sent: 08 May 2013 16:33
To: ifla-l@infoserv.inist.fr<mailto:ifla-l@infoserv.inist.fr><mailto:ifla-l@infoserv.inist.fr<mailto:ifla-l@infoserv.inist.fr>>
Subject: IFLA builds its new repository with EPrints Services

Dear IFLA Colleagues,
IFLA has signed a contract with ECS Partners Limited
(http://www.eprints.org/) for the building and hosting of its new
repository using EPrints Services. The repository will be publicly
launched during 2013 with contents including all 2013 World Library
and Information Congress (WLIC) papers, existing IFLA standards, and a
selection of advocacy documents. In time, freely-available full-text
resources and links to restricted content for all IFLA resources will
be uploaded and the contents will be developed and increased, in
particular with new resources for each subsequent WLIC.

The selection of EPrints Services follows a study carried by a working
group of the IFLA Governing Board, led by Genevieve Clavel-Merrin,
under the aegis of the IFLA Key Initiative 1 (Digital Content):
http://www.ifla.org/strategic-plan/key-initiatives/digital-content/repository.

A number of options were investigated and demonstrated, with EPrints
Services being found to offer the closest match to IFLA's defined
needs. The recommendation was approved by IFLA's Governing Board in
December 2012.

With the signing of the contracts, IFLA HQ staff are working with
EPrints Services staff to build the repository and upload the initial
contents. It is hoped that public access can be announced before the
2013 WLIC in Singapore with full functionality ready by the end of the
year. In future years, it is hoped that distributed uploading will be
possible and that the professional units will help to develop the
content with the addition of their resources.

News about the development of the repository will be posted on the
IFLA website: http://www.ifla.org/repository-news, and a web page will
be created where information about the repository is collected and
links are made available for the Standing Committees of IFLA
Professional Units, and all those interested in following its
development.

You can also read today's "Professionally Speaking" blog-post by
Genevieve Clavel-Merrin, the IFLA Governing Board's Repository Working
Group Chair, on what this means for the authors and session
coordinators at this year's WLIC:

I look forward to being able to update you with further news as the
work develops.

[Lib-helig-l] Fwd: FW: ANC Archives Available Online

Apologies for cross posting

Subject: ANC Archives Available Online

Dear Fatima

It was a proud moment for us last Monday evening. The ANC Digital Archive was officially launched at a gala dinner at the Sandton Convention Centre - the culmination of 19 months of hard work for us in spearheading the technical aspect of the project.

I believe the project represents a highly significant step forward for building digital archives in South Africa and the continent as a whole. Not only is the archive one of the most significant on the continent as far as a liberation struggle goes - the ANC being the oldest liberation movement on the continent, their struggle covered the longest period in the history of liberation from colonial domination - but the entire project was accomplished by African organisations. The work of digitisation was done by experts from Africa from two leading African academic institutions and three small and medium enterprises from South Africa. And the digitised archive is being stored and presented to researchers around the world on an archival digital repository system developed by an African company.  To top it off even the funder was South African. All of this means this is truly a first for digitisation on the continent and a greatly encouraging leap forward for our digital future. It truly is Africans telling Africa's story!

Find out more about:
The launch of the ANC Digital Archives including the President's speech

All the best and I look forward to your response,

Subject: [Liasaonline] A first for Higher Education Libraries Interest Group!

Dear Colleagues

Tuesday 30th April saw a number of firsts for LIASA and the Higher Education Libraries  Interest Group (HELIG).

HELIG National in collaboration with the Digital Curation Centre[DCC]  (Glasgow, UK) held a webinar on Digital Curation.    This was a first for HELIG (and LIASA), a first for the Digital Curation Centre and the first time use of the new Big Blue Button webinar technology from the University of Stellenbosch Library Service.

There were over 81 sign-ups from all over the world (including Australia and Ghana) but there  were over 100 in the audience (either signed in or in group sessions).    Most of the HE libraries in South Africa were represented.

Our presenters were Joy Davidson,  Associate Director of the DCC and Sarah Jones, Senior Institutional Support Officer. Joy leads the DCC’s training provision and sits on a number of international working groups to define digital curation curricula. Sarah is mainly involved in the DCC institutional engagement programme, supporting universities to develop research data management services. She also contributes to the delivery of training, publications and tools development. (About the Digital Curation Centre: http://www.dcc.ac.uk/about-us ).
Joyce Myeza,  HELIG National Convenor, did the introductions.

DCC has posted a news item at  http://www.dcc.ac.uk/news/liasa-webinar .     Slides are available here at   http://www.slideshare.net/sjDCC/rdm-liasa-webinar
The webinar was not recorded.

A big thank you must go to Joy Davidson and Sarah Jones of the DCC for their willingness and generosity in presenting the webinar.   Thanks to our Chair, Joyce Myeza and Chair Elect, Ina Smith (who did amazing work behind the scenes to get this all set up) and to Hilton Gibson, at Stellenbosch for all the technical support and assistance.

Some comments  received so far:-

Congratulations to the HELIG team on a very successful webinar. The information provided was very interesting and useful and it was amazing to think that we were enjoying a seminar presented by people in Glasgow but we didn’t have to incur huge expenses or travel anywhere at all! Absolutely wonderful!   - Nora Buchanan, UKZN

Thank you for a splendid webinar that was well received here at Rhodes -. Thandiwe Menze, Rhodes

Seminaar was  baie goeie initiatief! Dankie dat jy dit vir ons bewerkstellig het.  – Martie van Deventer, CSIR

Thanks for a great session this morning. Apart from the usefulness of the content of the Webinar, the interest that it generated, nationally, is great especially going forward in this new area affecting LIS services.  -  Jaya Raju, LISC, UCT

Evaluation forms will be going out to those who signed up.

The Higher Education Libraries Interest Group (HELIG)  plans to – in support of the LIASA strategy and to help strengthen higher education and research support in South Africa – host a series of activities throughout the year. The purpose of these will be to introduce new trends which also impact on libraries and service delivery, and to stay abreast of new developments as far as it concerns higher education in our country.

So watch this space for news of the next webinar!

Re: [Lib-helig-l] [Liasaonline] A first for Higher Education Libraries Interest Group!

Congratulations to the HELIG team and the collaborators (the Digital Curation Centre and Stellenbosch University Library Services) for an excellent first webinar on the critical topic of Digital Curation! This has proven that we can host a series of conversations using this technology which will enable LIASA members and South African librarians to engage with colleagues abroad.

I hope this will the first in a series of exciting exchanges between and by other LIASA Interest Groups as well…

Best regards
