[Lib-helig-l] New book - Information Literacy and Cultural Heritage - developing a model for lifelong learning

Dear colleagues,

The book: "Information Literacy and Cultural Heritage: developing a model for lifelong learning" is now published and available.

If anyone is interested to read about the influences (arising from my involvement with IFLA for the period 2003 - 2011), which shaped the ideas in this book, I wrote a blog post about that here:

In summary, the book is about how museums, archives and libraries can converge and combine to bring their collections (whether material or digital) alive to the general public in a context of free choice, lifelong learning.  Courses can be delivered to teach both information literacy skills, and awareness of cultural heritage, as well as tolerance of different worldviews at the same time, and it can be FUN. This speaks to the need to go beyond providing mere access, and suggests a way for museums, archives and libraries to provide a valuable educational and inspirational service to society.

On the surface, the approaches of information literacy, and cultural heritage appear to be opposed, and yet the overview of the main theoretical and academic trends of thought in the areas explored in the first parts of the book revealed that a dialectical synthesis was possible.

The proposed model is generic, and contextually fluid, able to be adapted and modified and updated when necessary according to different local contexts, and also rapidly developing changes in the various fields. It takes into account that two thirds of the world's population do not yet have internet access, and also takes into account the high access levels of most of the developed world.

There is a chapter on how to adapt the model to differing regional contexts, offering some guidelines and suggested methodologies to effectively achieve this on the practical, "on the ground" level, before concluding and offering a way forward.

The list of Contents is as follows:

Dear colleagues,

I hope that your courses and projects are going well. This message is to inform you about three exciting professional development opportunities including two which allow for online participation. My next message to the e/merge Africa list will relate to e/merge Africa activities in 2013.

1) The Open University UK is offering a MOOC on Open Education starting on 16 March. This is part of a formal online Master's level course on Openness and Innovation in elearning and will run for 7 weeks. The MOOC has been written and will be convened by Martin Weller of the Open University. There is no charge for registration to the MOOC.  Full information is available from the Open Education MOOC website.

2) The Learning Landscape Conference from 3-5 April in Cape Town brings together some of the key role players in the field of LEARNING in the Western Cape, to consider the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats regarding learning, and to share the tools and techniques that work.  The aim is to get a grip on "Who's doing what?" and "What is the next great thing?"  A powerful team of exciting speakers have been hand-picked for this landmark event. Topics include coaching, mobile learning, e-learning for systems training, using reflection for behaviour change, the heart and body as resources in learning, free mobile and online applications. Members of the e/merge Africa network can use a discounted early bird rate of R4500 until 15th March.  Full information is available on the Learning Landscape website.

Etienne is best known for his seminal work on communities of practice and social learning theory. Bev is best known for her pioneering work in international settings, learning across boundaries, and the use of social media. This is the first time that these workshops have been offered outside the USA.  The two four day workshops for professionals (14-17 May) and academics (20-23 May) will take place in the Fynbos Estate retreat near Cape Town. [Lib-helig-l] LIASA Conference 2013: Call for papers

LIASA Fifteen Annual Conference

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Date:              8-11 October
Venue:           Cape Town International Convention Centre

Theme:          LIBRARIES IN DIALOGUE FOR TRANSFORMATION AND INNOVATION

Contact:        conference2013@liasa.org.za

Website:        http://www.liasa.org.za

You are hereby invited to submit proposals for papers & posters that will focus on areas related to the theme of the conference.

The 15th Annual LIASA Conference aims to provide opportunities to debate, share, and learn from local and international professional colleagues and partners.  All relevant stakeholders and partners are invited to participate in discussions and workshops around the proposed topics.   Papers based on case studies and best practice would be given preference.  Papers and poster proposals on topics such as the following will be considered for inclusion in the conference programme:

LIBRARIES IN DIALOGUE FOR TRANSFORMATION AND INNOVATION

Human conversation is the most ancient and easiest way to cultivate the conditions for change – personal change, community and organizational change… dialogue are powerful tools for developing the capacity for deep, authentic conversation in organizations (Deepika Nath).

The golden thread weaved into transformation and innovation is dialogue which allows for the creation of flow and meaning through and between people. Dialogue is conversations between equals; it makes the implicit explicit; it is a change agent in relationships to create new grounds for mutual respect and collaboration. Dialogue is fundamental in building collective meaning and growing a sense of community and, enriching the spirit of collaboration.

Transformation is interpreted to be the change in thinking, change in practice, change in behaviour, change in engagements with the goal of nurturing a culture of innovation for a vibrant and better individual and contributor to national and global imperatives. The library as the epicentre of knowledge production and innovation must stimulate transformation for an improved quality of life for all.

South Africa has been on a positive political transformation trajectory since 1994. However, there has to be an extension of the political transformation agenda to include the development agenda which must be underpinned by open engagement with and between all stakeholders. The quadruple helix, that is, the library, government, civil society and the corporate world must collaborate to inspire and incite continuous and sustained dialogue en route to the development and strengthening of the transformation agenda: dialogue and transformation must become infectiously systemic.

It is beyond debate that information is the essential ingredient for dialogue and concomitant transformation. The core business of libraries is the acquisition, organization and dissemination of information. At the base of the formal learning hierarchy, school libraries are pivotal for a strong educational system. It is here that learners, exposed to appropriate, supplementary and complementary information are nurtured to become critical thinkers and active participants in a knowledge economy. Reinforcing critical thinking and participation in the knowledge economy is the people’s university – the public library. At the upper end of the formal learning hierarchy is tertiary education which, again, is totally dependent on libraries for success in producing active contributors to the national and global knowledge economy.

The growth and development of the library and information sector and the country demands ‘three-sixty’ dialogues with all within the quadruple helix: through dialogue will South Africa come out on the other side as economically and socially transformed and innovative.

The following are the sub-themes of the Conference:

Libraries in dialogue

Libraries and transformation

Libraries and innovation

Best practices in libraries

Libraries enhancing user experience

Libraries as an agent of change

School libraries and education

Academic and research Libraries

New modes of scholarly communication

Public libraries and social development

Libraries and civil society engagement

Special libraries

Libraries on the political agenda
