(From the H-net listserv)

>>> Mark L Lilleleht <mllillel@WISC.EDU> 3/31/2011 3:15 PM >>>
From: H-Net Announcements <announce@mail.h-net.msu.edu>
Date: 31 March 2011

The University of Fort Hare is extending an open invitation
to all interested parties to attend and to read academic
papers at a conference to be held at the University from 22
to 24 November 2011.

Conference theme: "Beyond the Apartheid University?
Interrogating the transformation of the South African Higher
Education landscape"

Sub-themes to be considered as focus of papers, but feel
free to innovate:

1. Research and the production of knowledge for a post-
Apartheid South Africa? Who is producing what and for whom?

2. The teaching and learning university vs. the research
intensive university: The HDIs as rural based institutions
and the "Ivy League".

3. Curricula for millennium born free generations: Has any
progress been made towards Africaness?

4. Universities and their roles in the promotion of
citizenship and the public good: What does it mean when
decency cannot feed an empty stomach?

5. Governance and the failing of collegiality in the face of
corporatism.

6. The Science System and the perpetuation of privileged
positions?

7. Intellectual activism and the re-imagining of
Post-Apartheid scholarship.

8. Freedom of speech as a form of resistance to intellectualism?

9. The professor as public intellectual and the
over-simplification of complexity: A marketing ploy?

10. Re-imagining the Humanities in Post-Apartheid /
Post-Colonial Higher Education.

Application and process of acceptance:

1. An electronic abstract of not more than 150 words to be
e-mailed by 31 May 2011 to wawusi@ufh.ac.za and the outcome
of reviewed abstracts by 31 July 2011.

2. Full papers submitted, 6 500 to 7 000 words, by 30
September 2011.

The registration process, payment of fees, paper
presentation format and conference venue will be announced
in February 2011. In the meantime send all queries to:
William Awusi at wawusi@ufh.ac.za

* Conference publication: A book to be published with peer
reviewed papers, double blind.

* Accommodation and travel: This will be communicated in
February 2011.

* Conference registration fee: R2 500 per delegate, with an
early bird rate of R2 000 payable before 31 August 2011.

Hi colleagues,

Do you use wireless scanners in your libraries (handheld device use to
scan barcodes on the floor, eg. to gather in-house stats)? If yes,
what
is the name of the product and is it working effectively?

Thanks

Hello,

University of Leicester Beyond Distance Research Alliance announces its Learning Futures Festival Online 2011 -- Follow the Sun, 13-15 April 2011! http://tinyurl.com/followthesun

Follow the Sun is our sixth learning futures festival, and this year is co-hosted by the Australian Digital Futures Institute, University of Southern Queensland. Like last year's wildly successful Learning Futures Festival 2010, this year's festival will be entirely online. We will be working with our colleagues at ADFI to put on a truly global online conference by having hosts in three countries to cover three time zones - UK, USA and Australia. Conference platforms will include Adobe Connect Pro 8, Moodle, and Second Life.

We have lined up six outstanding keynote speakers: Sugata Mitra, Charles Jennings, Terry Anderson, Gardner Campbell, Ron Oliver, and Gilly Salmon. For more info on each of them: http://bit.ly/i3VlG3

For a sneak peak at the Fast-Forward Workshop planned by Dr Sandra Romenska: http://bit.ly/f43htZ

And we announce our Follow the Sun image competition: http://bit.ly/e3Hjhx

[Lib-helig-l] IFLA/FAIFE survey on librarians' social media use internationally

IFLA social media survey link: www.surveymonkey.com/IFLAsocialmedia

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Social media has become a hugely important force in the world, and the
historic events in recent months have proven how integral they are to
how we engage, learn, and communicate in 2011.

In an effort to learn more about how librarians, library workers,
library students, and library associations use social media, the Free
Access to Information and Freedom of Expression committee of the
International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions has
developed a short survey on these topics.  Our hope is that the
results will allow us to better communicate with those in the
worldwide library community – using the most effective tools at our
disposal.  We're also very interested in those who DON'T use certain
social media, and why not.

Please take a few moments to complete the survey – and share it widely
with your colleagues and members!

[Lib-helig-l] Media Advisory: SA Library Week

MEDIA ADVISORY

SOUTH AFRICAN LIBRARY WEEK – 19-26 MARCH 2011

READ IN YOUR LANGUAGE @ YOUR LIBRARY

The Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) is celebrating South African Library Week during 19-26 March 2011 with the theme: “Read in your language @ your library”.

The launch of SA Library Week will take place at the Centre for the Book, Queen Victoria Street, Cape Town on Saturday, 19 March, where the Deputy Minister of Arts & Culture, Dr Joseph Phaahla will address the audience on the importance of libraries on the national development agenda.  A public storytelling event will follow in the Company Gardens.  See programme attached.

Librarians across the country will be hosting special programmes and launches for SALW during this week to highlight the services and resources available. Members of the public are encouraged to visit their libraries during this period and participate in these activities.  A selection of these programmes from around the country is available on the LIASA website, http://www.liasa.org.za.

The theme “Read in your language @ your library” encourages a culture of reading and intends to promote reading and publishing in all South African languages. This theme places the spotlight on the importance of mother tongue instruction as a key factor in education and also to ensure the preservation of culture and language.   The establishment of a reading culture starts from foundation years because a reading child will become a reading adult.  This theme also encourages the development of a dynamic local publishing industry that focuses on works in all literary genres and non-fiction in African languages in order for South Africa to become a nation of readers.   The focus will also be on writing and publishing in all South African languages.   The rich cultural diversity of South Africa is reflected in its languages and should be preserved and valued by generations to come.    Libraries are perfectly placed in our communities to provide the space, access and opportunities for the development of a thriving reading culture and the preservation and promotion of all the South African languages.    The theme “Read in your language @ your library” was translated in all 11 languages by the Language Unit in the Department of Arts and Culture and will be used on the posters for South African Library Week being distributed across the country in libraries and public spaces.

LIASA believes libraries belong at the forefront of SA’s development as a nation. Research has shown that access to reading materials in the mother tongue during the first years of development assists in the development of literacy levels and the development of a reading nation. Publishing in indigenous languages have not enjoyed priority during SA’s transition to a democracy and as libraries we should bring pressure to bear on the publishing industry to view publishing in these languages as more than just a business venture. LIASA endorses the activities of institutions such as The Centre for the Book and the National Library of South Africa in providing books in all local languages as well as the encouragement for authors to write in these languages.
