[Lib-helig-l] Interesting Friday Read ....

http://www.arl.org/bm~doc/nrnt-grad-roles-20dec12.pdf

This report presents findings from interviews and a scan of the current state of graduate student programming, and it identifies some of the opportunities and programmatic initiatives across ARL libraries primarily. To compile this report, interviews were conducted with leaders of services and spaces at ARL libraries focused on graduate students, and one non-ARL library (Oregon State University) with active graduate services. The report synthesizes trends, themes, and approaches, notes divergences among selected institutions and creates a snapshot of some of the new approaches and thinking related to delivering services and resources to graduate populations. Findings indicate that research libraries are developing new ways to assess and advance the graduate research process and enhance graduate education in partnership with their institutions, thereby addressing some of the challenges posed by the Commission. Recommendations and strategies for serving graduate students more effectively in the new climate are
provided.

[Lib-helig-l] Some End of the Year Reading - pre-prints from the College and Research Libraries

Dear Colleagues

Here’s the link to the latest pre-prints  from the College and Research Libraries

http://crl.acrl.org/content/early/recent

Some articles that caught my attention:

·          A Comparison of Evidence-Based Practice and the ACRL Information Literacy Standards:  Implications for Information Literacy Practice by Adams, Nancy

Evidence-based practice (EBP), like information literacy, is concerned with an individual’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes relating to using information. EBP is now a professional competency in fields as diverse as social work, nursing and allied health fields, and public policy. A comparison of the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education with the commonly-accepted EBP model shows congruence but the two models diverge in their use of authority of the producer as a marker of information quality and in their relative emphasis on formulation of the research question and application of information.

Perceived Inadequacy:  A Study of the Imposter Phenomenon among College and Research Librarians   by

The Imposter Phenomenon (IP) is an observed anxiety caused by an individual’s feelings of fraudulence, fear of being exposed as a fraud, and inability to internalize personal achievement. This study measures the incidence of the IP among librarians at college and research institutions in the United States and Canada and seeks to identify factors that contribute to its frequency. One in eight librarians reported above average IP scores. Younger librarians and those with less longevity experience IP feelings at a higher rate than more experienced counterparts. Also included is a discussion of how to lessen the impact of IP feelings.

Subject: [SCHOLCOMM] Supporting the Changing Research Practices of Historians – New Ithaka S+R Report

Dear colleagues,

Librarians and information service providers on this list may be interested in a new report we released yesterday: "Supporting the Changing Research Practices of Historians." Funded with support from NEH, this is the first in a series of new studies we are conducting that look at the needs of today's scholars on a field-specific basis and provide guidance for how librarians and other research support providers can better serve them.

I presented findings from this work along with Deanna Marcum, Ithaka S+R Managing Director, at the CNI meeting in Washington DC yesterday afternoon.  Attendees spurred quite a bit of discussion about the connections between researchers' use of digital cameras and scanners while visiting archives and special collections, and libraries' and archives' priorities to make their collections more discoverable and accessible. There were also some great ideas about future subjects for our research, including ideas for interdisciplinary fields.

We are eager to hear any feedback you may have on this work, and specifically about the actionable recommendations at the conclusion of the paper.  Discussion on-list or off is welcome.

[Lib-helig-l] Some weekend reading! Latest C&RL News – December 2012

Dear Colleagues
Weekend Reading!
Regards
Ingrid Thomson

Sent to you by IngridThomson via Google Reader:

via ACRL Insider by David Free on 12/6/12

C&RL News - December 2012The December 2012 issue of C&RL News is now freely available online. The research projects academic and research librarians undertake to improve their libraries can sometimes have unintended benefits. Andrea A. Wirth and Margaret Mellinger discuss how a study at Oregon State University helped librarians develop a water resources research guide in their article "Improving subject guides with existing citation analyses data."

In our continuing focus on collaborations in librarianship, project partners from the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Public Schools discuss how they worked together to improve the information literacy skills of high school students in a public health course. John J. Meier of Penn State University examines "Science graphic novels for academic libraries" and shares a conversation with researcher and science cartoonist Jay Hosler.

In this month's Scholarly Communication column, Kathleen Fitzpatrick of the Modern Language Association discusses "Openness, value, and scholarly societies." Pete McDonnell provides timely advice for getting in touch with "The inner librarian" in his The Way I See It Essay.

This issue marks the final Preservation News column authored by Jane Hedberg. Jane is retiring from her position at Harvard University and leaving C&RL News, as well. On behalf of ACRL and the C&RL News readership, I would like to thank Jane for her more than 20 years of keeping us up-to-date on the world of preservation. It has been a pleasure to work with her, and her work will be greatly missed.

Make sure to check out all of the other features and departments in this month's issue, including a revision of the Joint Statement on Faculty Status of College and University Librarians, brief information on ACRL activities at the ALA Midwinter Meeting in Seattle, and the call for volunteers for association committees and editorial boards. We also take a look back at the accomplishments of your association this month with the 2011–12 ACRL Annual Report.
