[Lib-helig-l] INVITATION: 5th Carnegie Library Leadership Academy 4-18 November 2011

Closing date for applications: Friday 23 September 2011.

The Fifth Library Leadership Academy will be the penultimate Academy offered by the Centre for African Library Leadership.

***

The Centre for African Library Leadership will be hosting its

fifth 2-week Library Leadership Academy in Pretoria, South Africa,

from 4-18 November 2011

Background: In 2008 the University of Pretoria Library Services (UPLS) was awarded a $1m grant by the Carnegie Corporation of New York (CCNY) to establish the Centre for African Library Leadership (CALL), within the Merensky Library. The CALL addresses the library leadership development needs within the South African Library and Information Services context by facilitating appropriate library leadership training and development programmes.

Success story: To date 4 Academies have been successfully hosted in July 2009, March and November 2010, and March 2011 respectively, 54 academic and public librarians have graduated and the impact has been felt personally and professionally by all participants.  A positive contribution is being made to employer institutions and the LIS sector is being strengthened.  We believe that the next generation of LIS leaders will be drawn from this corps of librarians.

Content: The Academy is designed to build leadership expertise in the national, academic and public/community library sectors. The programme focus is on best practices in library management, organisational leadership, personal leadership & styles, advocacy and communication skills, reconciliation and cultural integration in the workplace, introduction to Web 2.0 technologies, knowledge management, marketing and branding, etc

Applications are invited from senior and middle managers in academic and public/community and the national library sectors in South Africa.

The November 2011 Academy is also open to applications from colleagues on the African continent who are working in these three sectors.

For access to the application form, application instructions, eligibility, criteria for selection and stipulations of the Academy, please visit the UPLS Website: http://www.library.up.ac.za/carnegie/academy.htm

Closing date for applications: Friday 23 September 2011.

Inquiries may be directed to the CALL Programme Co-ordinator.

the future of libraries in the digital age

A message to all members of Library 2.0

As you know, September 15 (today) was the deadline for submitting presentation proposals for the inaugural Library 2.011 Worldwide Conference, but the number of conference site signups over the past four days has been incredible--clearly, many people are just now learning about the conference. Therefore, we've decided to extend the deadline for submitting a short abstract of your presentation. Speaking proposals are now due by Sunday, September 25. To view the six thought-provoking topic strands, visit: http://www.library20.com/page/strands-proposals.

If you already submitted your presentation proposal, we thank you for your timeliness. To show our appreciation, we will give you the choice of time slots for presenting. Proposals are currently being reviewed, and once accepted, we'll send you an early link to the scheduling page. Then simply choose an available time slot and date, and we'll see you online (there will be lots of training sessions in October to help you learn to use Blackboard Collaborate).

In addition to the new deadline of Sunday, September 25 for submitting proposals, here is an updated set of important dates to note:

  • September 30:  Acceptance notification of presentations that were submitted by the original deadline of September 15 will be emailed.
  • October 1:  Presentations submitted by the original deadline of September 15 will be allowed to start scheduling presentation times.
  • October 6:  Presentations submitted by the extended deadline of September 25 will be allowed to start scheduling presentation times.
  • November 2: The conference begins!

If you haven't already done so, take a moment to look through the set of presentation proposals that have been submitted to date: http://www.library20.com/forum/categories/library-2011-conference/listForCategory.

We are also very thankful for the support of our sponsor and partner organizations and everyone who has helped to spread the word about the conference.

As a reminder, this exciting event will be held online in multiple languages and time zones, and it's free to attend! We'll see you online November 2-3!

Thank you,
